JUST THE BEGINNING

In August Emma received a letter in the mail from People to People Student Travel.  In it she was told that she had been nominated to be a student ambassador and travel to London and Paris.  Wow! this was pretty neat.  We were to go to a meeting on Nov 2 at the University of Utah to learn more about it. Looking online we saw that it could cost up to $7000 and she may be gone up to 21 days.  SCARY!! for us as parents.  How are we supposed to let our baby girl (now 10yrs old, will be 11 for the trip) go to the other side of the world with complete strangers for that long and where in the world are we going to get that much money?

Well, we told Emma that it was a maybe and we needed to go to the meeting and find out more.  We hoped they needed chaperones and maybe my husband or I could go with them.

We went to the meeting on Nov. 2 quite nervous and back and forth on what to do. We found out that parents are not aloud but by the end of the meeting we felt a little more at ease about letting her go.  People to People seemed very organized and they have been doing this for about 50 years.  Emma would still have to be interviewed and be selected after that to go, only 20 students out of the whole auditorium would be selected.  But, now our greatest worry was HOW TO FUNDRAISE ABOUT $7000.  We figured we would have to do a fundraiser every month and came up with ideas. Here is the list of ideas of possible fundraisers ( some were thought up by a 10 year old mind you):

5k race
Dinner
Walking dogs
Babysitting
Lemonade Stand/ hot chocolate
French dinner and movie- Date night
Yard sale
Sell things at Quilted bear
Photography (Kirsten)- Family Photos
Go to Companies-sponsors
Car Wash
Mow lawns
Mothers day - Day Spa, do pedicures
Gift wrapping for Christmas

Lots of great ideas, now just to pull them off.

Nov.12 Emma had her interview.  We were a little nervous but I told Emma to just be herself and we will see where this takes us.  For Emma's sake I hoped she would be selected but In my heart I had a tiny hope that she wouldn't be selected, this is a scary thing for me to let her go so far, so young.  Emma did well.  We found out that one of the leaders that will be going with her has a daughter on a mission in Paris right now.  They were very impressed that Emma could speak French and that she has dreamt of going to France since she was 6.

Nov. 14th we got the call.  Emma has officially been selected to be a Student Ambassador with People to People and travel to London and France on their trip "Tale Of Two Cities".  Emma was so pumped to get that call.

Nov. 15th our Home Teachers came.  Bro. Hawthorn and Bro. Tilby and Emma told them about her opportunity.  Bro. Hawthorn pulled out his wallet and said that he wanted to be the first to donate and handed her $20. THANK YOU BRO. HAWTHORN!! ($6980 to go)

Nov 23 was a busy day.  We had a ward breakfast in the morning of which Emma and I left early to head to our first meeting with our People to People leaders, then we had our Grappendorf Family Thanksgiving party.  At our ward breakfast Sis. Lowe told us that she had a bag of things she has crocheted that she wants to donate to Emma's cause.  We can sell them in my booth at Quilted Bear and take the money for Emma's trip.  Wow! We have some pretty awesome friends. THANK YOU SIS. LOWE (I will update as things sell).  At the meeting with People to People they introduced a fundraiser idea which was to sell Butter Braids.  We decided every little bit helps and we would take this opportunity.  Then at our family party Grandma & Grandpa and Dan & Stephanie were the first to order Butter Braids THANK YOU FAMILY! Then Cindy and Rob gave Emma $300.  WOW! we know that this had to be a sacrifice, especially this time of year as Christmas approaches.  We appreciate this donation so very much.  THANK YOU CINDY AND ROB!! ($6680  to go)

Dec 7th we turned in our Butter Braid order of 35 butter braids

Dec 14th we picked up our Butter Braid order and began to distribute.

Emma made $170 with the Butter Braids.  THANK YOU EDIE MORGAN WITH BUTTER BRAIDS AND EVERYONE WHO ORDERED. ($6510 to go)

Dec 24.  We had a great Christmas Eve with family.  Uncle Matt and Auntie Elisa gave Emma $50. THANK YOU MATT AND ELISA ($6460 to go)
